Youtube is a free online collection of videos uploaded by everyday users all over the world. It is also used by numerous companies to advertise their products and/or services. Many TV shows and movies can also be viewed using the site. It was started by three individuals who quit their jobs with PayPal to pursue their dream of creating their own business. Since its inception in the mid 2000s, it has grown so large that more than six billion hours worth of videos are viewed on Youtube every day.
The Most Watched Youtube Videos
Currently, the most watched video on Youtube is Psy’s Gangnam Style, which is no surprise considering how much hype surrounded this video from the day it was first posted. No other video has garnered more interest by Youtube users than this one. Many people who don’t normally use Youtube even used it long enough to view this video. Psy can give credit to American Idol for helping his video become the site’s most watched to date as the show helped put it in the spotlight. Psy even appeared on the show’s Season 12 finale to perform Gangnam Style.
What many people don’t know about Psy is that he is a Korean rapper who has been recording music for over 10 years, but was largely unknown in the U.S. before the popularity of Gangnam Style propelled him into the spotlight. However, the song was a huge hit in Korea before anyone in the U.S. had ever heard of it. Thanks to American Idol and Youtube, it has become a phenomenon.
As of June of 2014, Gangnam Style made it into the Youtube record books with two billion views. No other video on the site had previously garnered that many views. At that time, when one would ask what Youtube video had the most views, the top eight answers were:
- Waka Waka by Shakira
- Psy’s Gentleman
- LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem
- Eminem’s Love The Way You Lie
- Charlie bit my finger — again ( a user uploaded video featuring a toddler and a baby)
- Jennifer Lopez’s On The Floor
- Justin Bieber’s Baby
As this list shows, for all the user uploaded videos, Youtube views are dominated by famous musicians and other performers posting their own music videos and other content for fans. Whatever video falls into the “most viewed” category must be one that appeals to a worldwide audience.
Types of Youtube Videos
There are a few types of videos that Youtube provides viewers with. This includes comedy/entertainment videos, highlights, instructional, music videos/performances and review/commentary/talk. The comedy/entertainment videos include things like movie parodies and bloopers while the highlight videos include memorable moments from sporting events and TV shows as well as travel videos. Tribute videos dedicated to deceased celebrities and even extraordinary every day people also fall into this category.
A wide variety of instructional Youtube videos have taught viewers everything from how to cook, how to fix a car to proper makeup application techniques. Sometimes these instructional videos benefit the one that created them just as much as they benefit the people they were created for. One example of this is a young woman who posted instructional Youtube videos showing young women the proper way to wear their makeup. The video got so much attention that the user who made it eventually acquired her own brand of makeup.
As the most watched Youtube video, Gangnam proves music videos are one of the main types found on the site. In addition to music videos from major artists, there are also amateur musicians who post their videotaped performances on Youtube in the hopes of gaining wider exposure for their music. Perhaps the most relevant example of this leading to success and fame is the fact that Justin Bieber posted videos of his musical performances on Youtube when he was unknown.
Reviews, editorials, commentaries and general rants and expressions of opinion make up the fifth category of Youtube videos. In general these videos are posted by everyday users of the service and often go unnoticed or only watched by the user’s circle of family and friends.
What is a Youtube partner?
Youtube has a partner program that those who create video content for the site can join at any time. The program offers resources that users can rely on to get their message out to the masses. Some of the benefits of joining this program are that members get help increasing the number of people that watch their videos. Video equipment and development programs are made accessible to members and allow them to produce videos of higher audio, sound and content quality. Banners and thumbnails can be customized and included in a member’s videos and on their individual Youtube channel. Youtube partners are also given the ability to include links to their website in the videos they post. In addition, members have the option of being able to monetize the content in their videos. A Google AdSense account must be connected to a member’s Youtube account in order for them to make money through the site.
Members in many countries throughout the world can apply to be a Youtube partner. These countries include:
- New Zealand
- South Africa
The amount of money Youtube members can earn when they join the Partner Program fluctuates and is impossible to predict beforehand. The most recent data made public revealed that members could reasonably expect to earn anywhere from $2.50 to $5.00 for each 1000 views their video gets on Youtube. Top Youtube stars can make as much as $5 for every 1000 views. When it comes to a member’s Youtube channel, they can expect to earn $.01 every time someone views the channel. Sponsors and video ads also allow Partner Program members to earn money.
There are certain qualifications that one must meet before being able to join the Partners Program. Users must have a Youtube channel that has a minimum of 2,000 subscribers and the content of the channel has to have been viewed at least 50,000 times. They must also have a minimum of 1,000 views for each video they have posted on their channel.
The Youtube Partner Program has both its advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages not mentioned above include the fact that when a Youtube Partner Program member uploads a video they created they automatically own both the distribution rights to the video and its copyright. When Youtube users who are not a member of the Partner Program upload their videos they do not own either the copyright or the distribution rights, and Youtube can use the videos any way they choose to.
The disadvantages of joining the site’s Partner Program include the fact that there are a lot of red tape restrictions applied to uploaded videos. This includes the fact that program members are not permitted to use misleading images in the ads included with their videos. It also means that arrows pointing to ads that appear in those videos are not allowed. Another possible disadvantage is that Partner Program members are not permitted to upload content created by someone else unless they have the permission of that individual.
Youtube can be a powerful tool when used correctly. When one asks themselves what video has the most views on Youtube and what is the most watched Youtube video, the answer often leads to the discovery of members of the site that have skills, knowledge or talent they are eager to share with the world, but it should be also treated in the right way and for sharing the right type of videos in order not to come into the world of youtube bullying and face such problems.
