There are a wide variety of ways to fight depression, that cloud which can often settle over a teenager and grow heavier and heavier with each day. It’s often tough to be a teen, as there are social pressures, physical awkwardness and a variety of nerve-wracking experiences that you must face for the first time as you come of age. Among other things, this can lead to depression which can cause you to act out or become very withdrawn and sad, which can be dangerous for a teenager, or just about anyone’s overall health. Below are some easy and enjoyable ways for a teenager to fight depression.

Ways to Fight Depression: Work Out

One great way for a teenager to take their minds off of whatever is bothering them and getting them down is to work it out of their system. Literally. Go and work out for 15 to 30 minutes, or more, sweating out the stress and tension, among other toxin within your body. By working out, chemicals will be released inside your body, which will change your overall mood and at least for a time make you forget about your depression. If running, biking, swimming or lifting weights doesn’t meet your fancy, consider trying yoga and meditating. These will release the same chemicals, just in different ways, helping you to center yourself and change your overall mood. While you may not want to do this exercise thing at first, stick with it and force yourself to work out. Maybe even recruit a friend to work out with you for support. After a few weeks of exercise on a regular basis, you will find yourself actually wanting to do it.

Ways to Fight Depression: Eat Well

The better you eat, the better you usually feel and this translates towards fixing moods of depression. While you may prefer to eat fatty, sweet and generally unhealthy but tasty foods, this will only add to the depressed feelings you are already having. Bad food weighs you down and keeps you from having a lot of energy. This will only make your depressed feelings more pronounced. Try eating lots of fruits and vegetables and eating light meals to fight depression. As the old saying goes you are what you eat, so if you eat bright and healthy things that should translate to your overall mood.

Ways to Fight Depression: Follow What You Like

What do you really love to do? If you can identify that, do it all the time and totally immerse yourself in it. Ignore all the other teenage pressures telling you to do other things—if you can find something you are passionate about, it will help you focus those stresses that may be depressing you on something you really love and care about. It will probably help you excel at whatever this passion is as well, as it will become your escape and outlet from all those things in life that have you down in the first place. And it might just help you discover what you really want to do in the future.

Ways to Fight Depression: Think About How Much Worse It Can Be

While things can be depressing for the average teenager, life could be a lot worse. For the most part, teenagers in America have it pretty good and while aspects of their lives can certainly be upsetting and stressful, there are many worse situations out there. So rather than focusing on the negative things in your life, think about all the good things you have going for you. This process will help you to fight depression. Try to look at each of those things and really appreciate them and consider other people who don’t have those things. This will give you perspective, which is something that teenagers regularly forget about. It’s also important to keep in mind that all those concerns a teen may have are things that are usually impermanent and will be forgotten once they go off to college.

Ways to Fight Depression: Talk to Someone

Don’t be afraid to talk to your parents or a counselor if you are feeling depressed. There is no shame in asking for help from someone else, as life can be very difficult for a teenager to deal with on their own. Not being afraid to ask for help and to be able to talk without reservations to someone who will listen will be like a safety valve that will release those pressures that depression will build on someone’s emotional health. This is one of the best ways to fight depression, but you have to take the first step and speak to someone about it.
