The human body is a perfect biological machine, this machine need certain fuels to run efficiently. Depression is a crippling and can stop any person in their tracks. There are many different contributors to depression, and symptoms, it is literally a “complete lack of hope”. In the past, and occasionally today doctors would give patients a shot of high dosages of B-12 when they complained of a lack of energy. Vitamin B-6 is also associated with energy and brain function. Most of the B vitamins are linked to depression if the patient is depleted. For the same reasons as above. Many patients who are depressed have been tested to be low in these important B vitamins.   • Magnesium has been considered a remedy for anxiety and mental problems, long before depression was a known illness. If you are eating a typical modern diet you are likely not getting enough of these vitamins that need to be restored each day.

Other vitamins that are not water soluble are considered fat soluble, these stay in your system longer, yet can be depleted eventually, or through certain events. Women for example, after having a period lose a lot of magnesium. After giving birth, women are depleted of many vitamins and minerals. These sometimes never get restored if the woman does not take precautions. These factors could contribute to the higher rates of depression in women, and postpartum depression.

It is important to maintain a healthy level of vitamins and minerals in your system through healthy eating whether you are suffering from depression or not. If you are depressed, talk to your health care provider about adding a vitamin regimen to your anti-depressants. Taking vitamins should not replace any care your Doctor has recommended while you are still depressed, but there have been cases where a mixture of anti-depressants and vitamins in the beginning kick-started new brain habits. And eventually the patient did not need the anti-depressants at all. Do not feel bad about taking anti-depressants, depression is an disease, just like anything else you would take medicine for. Just because the symptoms are literally in your brain, does not make them just as real as a broken arm.
