Depression is a very serious condition that, if not properly cared for and treated, can lead to much more damaging problems. However, depression is also rather common and millions of people are affected by depression each and every year. That is also why there are so many different songs about depression and loneliness. Whether the songs about overcoming depression or songs about depression and cutting oneself due to the way they feel, many of these songs are from extremely popular artists who have gone through extremely difficult situations. This is a collection of sad songs about depression that people both young and old might know and not even realize what the songs are talking about.
Depression can hit anyone at any time. Even when it appears as if life is perfect from the outside, nobody really knows what is going on inside of their head. Depression can also originate with just about anything as well. Most people become depressed after the loss of a loved one. This is common human emotions at play. While each person’s depression is a bit different from the other, it is something many people need to deal with and fight though. Whether it is after the loss of someone dying or simply the breakup from a long time love, depression creeps into the lives of anyone. This is true for members of the band Blink-182 and the song Adam’s Song deals with this exact issue. This is an exert from the song dealing with depression:
I never thought I’d die alone
I laughed the loudest who’d have known?
I trace the cord back to the wall
No wonder it was never plugged in at all
I took my time, I hurried up
The choice was mine I didn’t think enough
I’m too depressed to go on
You’ll be sorry when I’m gone
Bass player Mark Hoppus penned this song while going through depression while on tour. By spending months on the road, away from his family, Hoppus fell into depression, although he also mentions in the song that he will return and everything will eventually be alright with the family as the tour is over.
Sometimes people make the assumption that attractive individuals simply have it easy and that they do not battle the same emotions as other people. After all, if they are beautiful, so they are not going to go through a bad breakup or other issues other individuals might go through. However, Katy Perry has admitted to going through depression many times before, and despite wealth, fame and tremendous looks, it is simply an indication that this is going to happen in the lives of everyone, or at least it has the potential of occurring in the lives of just about anyone. It really is all about going through depression and who is around to help someone.
If you know someone who is depressed, you need to be there with them and give them a shoulder. If you are dealing with depression, you need to just talk with a close friend or family member. In Katy Perry’s song By the Grace of God, she talks about depression and not only who she turned to in helping her through depression but how she also used her faith to push her out of depression as well. This is a an excerpt from the song.
Was 27 surviving my return to Saturn
A long vacation didn’t sound so bad
Was full of secrets locked up tight like iron melting
Running on empty, so out of gas
Thought I wasn’t enough and I wasn’t so tough
Laying on the bathroom floor
We were living on a fault line
And I felt the fault was all mine
Couldn’t take it any more
By the grace of God (there was no other way)
I picked myself back up (I knew I had to stay)
I put one foot in front of the other and I
Looked in the mirror and decided to stay
Wasn’t gonna let love take me out
Katy Perry is one of the biggest names in music today, and yet even her can battle and go through depression. Depression is not something that just affects every day people. This song is about Katy dealing with the depression after her marriage with Russell Brand collapsed. It is another song about depression and how she battled through it. She also points to how her faith in God helped her through her difficult time.
Do you feel as if you have hit a rough patch in your life and you don’t know what to do about it? It can often seem as if nothing is going to get better and all the glory days are behind you. When your life suddenly turns, you might not be able to see any positives out of it. However, there is always brighter days ahead of you. Paul McCartney is one individual who can prove this. He went through extensive depression at several different points in his life, although one particular time really hit him hard. As he has shown though, it is always possible to move past the instance. So, if you are going through depression, you need to look towards Paul McCartney and his song Every Night.
Every night I just want to go out,
Get out of my head
Every day I don’t want to get up,
Get out of my bed
Every night I want to play out
And every day I want to do ooh ooh oh oh
But tonight I just want to stay in
And be with you,
And be with you.
And then a little later in the song, Paul sings:
Every day I lean on a lamp post,
I’m wasting my time
Every day I lay on a pillow,
I’m resting my mind
Every morning brings a new day
Every night that day is through
Ooh ooh oh oh
But tonight I just want to stay in
And be with you,
And be with you.
If a one of the biggest stars to ever walk the planet can go through depression, anyone can. This song came out not too long after the breakup of the Beatles. The Beatles has defined Paul McCartney’s professional life, and while he has worked with other bands and on solo projects, the Beatles is always going to be his name to fame. However, beyond just being one of many depression songs, Every Night is also about his declaration of love to Linda. In interviews, Paul McCartney stated that after the breakup, he essentially didn’t just lose one best friend, but three best friends, and these three friends didn’t just disappear, they turned on him. Due to this, McCartney said he turned to alcohol and drugs to help, although as one of the depressing songs suggests, there is almost always something there to help pull someone out, and in this case, it is his love for Linda.
Now, there are hundreds of songs out there regarding depression and thoughts of suicide. For fans of country music, there are actually less depression songs than most other styles of music. This does not mean that country singers do not go through depression though. Many of the musicians just pen a different style of song to battle it. Taylor Swift is an excellent example of this. She has gone through depression and sadness after breakups and other similar situations. However, instead of producing country songs about depression, she writes more revenge songs about the people who made her feel the way she did. This can be rather satisfying to just about anyone, although it is probably most satisfying to Taylor Swift knowing that the rest of the world now knows about what happened to her and how she battled through it.
It is extremely important for anyone who is battling depression though to seek out help and simply have someone around to talk to. Whether it is a close friend, a family member or just someone through a helpline over the phone, having someone on hand to assist with this sort of a situation is very important, as there is always something better on the other side, no matter how down and depressed a person can feel. Things do get better and it is going to drastically help a person to know that everyone, even famous musicians, have gone through depression.
