It is along the same line as the other book series and has several short scary stories that are perfect for any camping trip or time you want to feel spooked.

One example of a scary story with these books is the Girl with the Green Ribbon. This story is found in the book In a Dark Dark Room and other Scary Stories. This is a story about a boy and girl who meet as children and the girl always has a green ribbon around her neck. The boy asks her what it is for and she says that she will tell him later. As they become teenagers they start to date and he asks her again. She tells him again that she will tell him when the time is right. When they get married he asks her once more about the green ribbon she always wears around her neck. Again she insists that now is not the right time. Finally she is on her deathbed and the man asks her once more. This time she tells him to take the ribbon off and when he does, her head falls off.

This is only one example of great scary stories to tell in the dark with kids. It can be a fun way to give each other a little scare. Keep in mind that you can find these stories on more than just in books. You can also use the internet to look up great fictional scary stories that you can share.

Scary Ghost Stories

There are many scary ghost stories out there. You can find these online, in books, on TV and even in movies. The cool thing about these stories is that there is no real way to measure whether they are true or not. There are shows on TV that talk about capturing ghosts and will share information on how they do this.

You can use the information that you find from various sources for your ghost story or you can even create one on your own. Some people like to take stories that they have heard or found and embellish on them a little more or tailor them to the situation. This can help you to create an effective ghost story.

One example of a ghost story is Bloody Mary. While most people think of her as the ghost whose name you say three times and she shows up in the mirror (which can be a great way to intro this story) the truth is that she was considered a witch. No one would dare cross her fields for fear that their livestock would die or their children would get sick or worse. Now it is said that when you say her name three times, her ghost is not only in the mirror but returns to exact her revenge on the person who summons her.

Find True Scary Stories

While made up stories can be a lot of fun, there is something truly scary about scary true stories or ones that are based on true stories. These can easily be found online, such as in news articles or even shared on social media. The idea is that by knowing the story is true, it will give a greater scare factor.

If you are looking to really scary stories that are true, then you should know about. The Winchester House is a great example of this. It is a true story about the wife of the gun maker William Winchester. His wife Sarah was convinced that the ghosts of the people killed by her husband’s guns were coming after her. This is why she kept her home in a state of construction and built mazes through the home. She figured by doing this the ghosts would not be able to navigate their way through and find her. She died of heart failure and a few months after this the home was converted into historical museum. All in all, she spent roughly $75 million trying to “ghost proof” her home.

Tips for Telling a Great Scary Story

If you want to tell scary stories you need to do more than just have a story to tell. While the story you choose is important, knowing how to tell the story properly will make even a dull scary story absolutely terrifying. Here are a few tips:

  • Start by setting the mood. Having the room dark or the light dimmed is best. Then you should keep a flashlight with you to create a small amount of light.
  • Work on speaking in a hushed voice. When you tell the story, using a hushed tone is the best way to keep people listening as well as to build anticipation. Also, this gives you the ability to be loud at the perfect moment and really startle the people listening.
  • Be dramatic when you tell the story. Take the time to draw out the things you say. If you are talking about a long hallway, exaggerate the long. Also, add in pauses to help build the suspense of the story.
  • Be visually expressive. You should use your hands when you tell the story to help create a better picture. Even just exaggerating the emotions with your face can really help to set the tone for the story.
  • Don’t be afraid to embellish. Feel free to change the story up a little to suit your needs. For instance, if you are planning on telling a ghost story but then notice that someone in your group (or preferably several people in the group) are afraid of clowns, then find a creative way to substitute out the ghosts for clowns.
  • Practice the story. Before you tell the story in front of an audience, it can be helpful to practice it on your own. Do it in front of a mirror so you can see how it will look when you tell it to others.

Creating Your Own Scary Stories

Another great option when you want to find great scary stories to tell in the dark is to come up with a few of your own. While it may seem like a good idea to come up with a story from scratch, these are not always effective. This is why it is helpful to know how to create them beforehand.

The first thing you will want to do is to base the story on something you have read or seen. This can be a fictional scary story or even a true one. You will want find one that you enjoy and figure out why it works. Understand what makes it scary so that you can craft your own story.

Even if you have an idea of how you want to craft your story, make sure that it is well crafted. It can be helpful to try telling it to someone you trust and seeing whether they think it is scary or not. Also, make sure that when you are coming up with a story that it is appropriate for the audience you will be telling it to.
