The prevalent mode of personality testing in the academy is the big five personality test. The big 5 personality test comes from the statistical study of responses to personality items. This test uses the Big-Five Factor Markers from the International Personality Item Pool, developed by Goldberg (1992). Using a technique called factor analysis researchers can look at the responses of people to hundreds of personality items and ask the question “what is the best was to summarize an individual?” The general result is that while there seem to be unlimited personality variables, five stand out. They are extroversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness. The test consists of 50 statements. Each statement must be rated on how much you agree that that statement on a five point scale: (1) disagree, (2) slightly disagree, (3) neutral, (4) slightly agree, and (5) agree. It should take most people three to eight minutes to complete the exam. Participation in the big five personality testing is used for educational or self-interest purposes only.
