Question 2 What number never ends?

  1. Pi
  2. infinity
  3. the number of times it is possible to divide something in half
  4. a sideways eight
  5. all of the above

Answer: The correct answer is “E.” Here’s why.

Pi is represented in mathematics by a Greek symbol. Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter of a circle. The number starts like this 3.1415926 and continues on after the decimal point forever. Pi has been calculated to over two quadrillion decimal places and there is no pattern in the numbers at all.

A few people with outstanding memories have been able to recite Pi from memory correctly to tens of thousands of decimal places. One Japanese man, Akira Harguchi claims to hold the world record at 100,000 digits. He is requesting verification by the Guinness Book of World Records.

For average people an approximation of Pi is sufficient for most purposes. By remembering this phrase “May I have a large container of coffee?” it is easy to remember the first few digits of Pi. Just count the numbers of letters in the words making up the phrase. They are 31415926.

Infinity is the term used to describe anything without limit. No matter how small something gets, dividing it in half is possible theoretically to continue forever.

When the number 8 is turned to its side such as this ∞, it becomes the mathematical symbol for infinity.

After the Titanic went down to the depths, she insisted the lifeboat crew return to the area to look for any remaining survivors. The public learned of this gallant effort and gave her the moniker of “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.” A Broadway musical play and a successful film of that same name were made based on her life. The actor Kathy Bates portrayed her in the blockbuster smash hit film, Titanic, released in 1997.
