Psychologists have broken down the human personality into five distinct categories; neuroticism, extraversion, openness, conscientiousness and agreeableness. The acronyms used to refer to these personality traits are CANOE, OCEAN and NEOAC. The characteristics of individuals are what makes them unique and special. This is why there are no two people that are exactly the same. Although, some people do share some of the same characteristics, it does not mean that they share the same personality. This is often referred to as idiosyncrasy. Idiosyncrasy describes the unique mannerism, or behavioral that an individual displays. It is more like their personal “signature”, because they are recognized or identified by the one special behavior or mannerism they display.

Researchers has divided and defined the big five personality traits. The big 5 or big5 personality traits have been studied by researchers, clinicians, and psychologists for decades. A personality test is used to determine which type of personality trait people possess.

Five Personality Traits Defined In Details

Extraversion – describes a certain level of sociability and enthusiasm a person has.

Agreeableness – describes a particular level of friendliness and kindness a person has.

Conscientiousness – describes a certain level of organization and work ethic a person possess.

Emotional Stability – describes a certain level of tranquility and calmness a person possess.

Intellect – describes a particular level of curiosity and creativity a person possess.

These are not actual personalities of individuals, but rather dimensions of the big five personality. People can and do possess one or more or perhaps all of these dimensions. Research has determined that people personalities are altered by their life experiences, and that their personalities are actually very stable.

Openess

This characteristic type has a love and appreciation for the arts. People in this group expresses these sensations; emotion, curiosity, imagination, creativity, adventure, unusual thinking, and a wide range of other emotions and experiences. They also are open to the world around them, as they tend to be more than willing to try new challenges. Conscientiousness

This personality type is capable of showing strong self-discipline, and can act difficult at times. The people in this particular group aim for high expectations and achievements that are outside of normal expectations. They have a way of controlling, regulating and directing their impulses. This personality type does not act on impulse, and is not spontaneous. Instead, very decision is carefully planned and executed, with a desired outcome in mind.

The level of conscientious or awareness tends to be higher in younger adults. However, as individuals gets older the level of conscientious tends to decline. This group will normally follow a pattern or routine that is conducive to how they think and act. This group is always prepared, they pay great attention to details, they complete their chores and business matters right away, they are precise in their work, they are organized, and they like order.

Extraversion

This characteristic type is open to a depth of activities, and love external outings and social events. People in this group loves to explore the outside world, and take great joy in interacting with others. Extraversions are completely opposite from introverts, as introverts tend to be low key, and very reserved. They are often mistaken for being shy or anti-social, but they are highly intelligent and quite observant. Introverts are more in touch with their own social world than extraverts.

Agreeableness

People in this personality group values getting along with others. This social group loves social harmony, and is often agreeable with others, for the stake of unity. Agreeableness people are mild mannered, trustworthy and trusting. They are helpful, and will often compromise their own interest when they are with others. This group also possess an optimistic view of human nature. However, in settings where leadership skills are evaluated, such as the military setting, agreeableness personality traits are more likely to receive a lower rating. People with this personality characteristic tends to be more in tune with the feelings and emotions of others.

Neuroticism

This personality type tends to display more negative motions like depression, anxiety and anger. People in this group are often defined as being emotionally unstable or emotionally stable. This actually depends on their tolerance level and stimuli. People who score on the big five personality traits test shows that they are vulnerable and they react to their emotions negatively. They are most likely to read a lot in ordinary situations and may view them as being threatening or harmful. Even minor irritations and frustrations are blown out of portions, and viewed as being hopeless.

They are often in a bad mood, and they take a pessimistic approach toward relationships and work. However, people in this group can and do experience both negative and positive experiences. People with this personality trait is easily upset, stressed, irritated, distributed, depressed, have feeling of anxiety, relaxation, and often experience mood swings and feeling of feeling blue.

Science and research is amazing. They both have a way of putting a prospective on how people feel, think and act. People have a tendency to display one or more characteristics. While some people can be open, agreeable, neuroticism, conscientious, and extraversion, they can also display opposite characteristics, which will still place them in their prospective characteristics. Many people have several different types of personality traits. The Big 5 Theory portrays just how complex humans can be. Personalities are what makes people who they are, and without the scientific tests and proofs people will not fully understand who they are, and why the act the way to do. Employers and career finders find it very exciting and useful to include the results of personality tests. The results of these tests will help employers place employees in the right leadership position.

It is obvious that some personality types of are not cut out to be heartless, cold or fearful leaders. However, in the world of business, individuals must possess several unique and distinct personality traits if they are to be successful in the workplace. For this reason, businesses take the results of these personality trait test seriously.
