What is homophobic bullying? This is the bullying of an individual by one or more individuals who do not agree with the individual’s sexual preference. Homophobic bullying is also referred to as gay bullying or gay bashing. This is a common form of bullying that takes the lives of many children, teens, and even adults.

Why Does This Happen?

Many parents want to know what is homophobic bullying, and why it happens. Homophobic bullying happens sometimes because people are afraid of what they do not understand. Since it is different, a lot of people in society do not want to accept it. Because of this, no one wants to be seen with someone who is a homosexual. In other instances, some parents pass on their hate for homosexuals to their children while other parents teach their children to accept everyone as their are and never to shun anyone for being different. This is what creates the perfect storm.

In a lot of instances, the individual who is being bullied is in fact heterosexual, but they are labeled because of the clothes they wear, how they wear the clothes and the color of the clothes. If a boy wears a pink shirt, for many people, this is an indefinite sign that they are homosexual. This is not true, but in their mind, there cannot be any other explanation for wearing a male wearing a pink shirt.

Homophobic bullying has a lot to do with relating to another. Some people do not want to think outside of the box because it is painful for them to accept change. Some individuals do not approve of what they are not able to understand. Some people participate in homophobic bullying because they are not able to understand why a person would want to be in a relationship with the same sex because they would never do that. It all stems back to being different. Not too many people are fond of change. This is what is known as doing the unthinkable.

Lesbian vs Gay

Many people who participate in homophobic bullying have no clue as to what is really going on. Homosexual can be a man or a woman who is in a relationship with someone of the same sex. The term for a homosexual woman is a lesbian, and the term for a homosexual male is commonly known as being gay. In this society, two women being in a relationship are not frowned upon as much as two men being in a relationship, which is why homosexual males are victims of more crimes than women.

A lot of homosexuals are easily targeted because of their actions. Some men are not afraid to reveal their feminine side, which poses a problem for many people in society. Some people are able to look and turn their heads if they disagree, but unfortunately, this does not work for everyone. Some people feel threatened by homosexuals and will go to extreme measures to make themselves feel comfortable.

More than 65% of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people are children in their teens and feel that homophobic bullying is wrong. 30% to 50% of children who are fond of the same sex are more prone to bullying than the 10% to 20% of people who are not fond of the same sex.

Many people realize that being different is not always a good thing in society, but they continue to push through the tough days and stand up for what they believe in.

More people are affected from homophobic bullying than you think. People who condone and agree with same sex relationships are also frowned upon. People who support homosexuals can be prime targets of violence and bullying. Sometimes bullies target the families of homosexual’s to hurt them instead of causing physical harm to the individual. At the end of the day, everyone is affected by this form of bullying whether they want to believe it or not.

Homophobic bullying is something that may not disappear with time. There are a lot of proud homosexuals in the world who are not afraid to show who they are to world. There will always be someone who disagrees with homosexuality, and the issue will always be there, which results in a continuous cycle.
