There is no set of rules for raising your children. Each child is different and requires specific attention and interaction. However, this does not mean you are not able to learn from the insights of other individuals. Many great people in the past have had insightful quotations about being a parent and raising a child. These quotes about parents can often relate to single parent quotes or even step parent quotes. It does not necessarily mean they are your biological children at all. Instead, the quotes tend to focus specifically on the act of raising a child and ensuring they have the best possible life.

Khalil Gibran

“Your children are not your children. They are sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you. And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the make upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness. For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He also loves the bow that is stable.”

In short, Khalil wrote this poem about how a child might be born to you, they are not going to become adults specifically because of you. They are the culmination of all of the parenting that you have received and your parents have received and the insights of other adults throughout the years. As he points out, life does not go backwards, so children are always going to move forward from their parents. this poem truly is one of the exceptional parents quotes around.

Anne Frank

“Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.”

Anne Frank never had the chance to become a parent herself. However, her journal has inspired millions of readers since her time, hiding from the Nazis. In her short life, she experienced a considerable amount, and yet even from the eyes of a child, you could see that parents can do everything for a child, but ultimately it comes down to the child deciding what to do with their life.

C. JoyBell C.

“I think that the best thing we can do for our children is to allow them to do things for themselves, allow them to be strong, allow them to experience life on their own terms, allow them to take the subway… let them be better people, let them believe more in themselves.”

C. JoyBell C. points out the issue of helicopter parenting in that it is important to allow a child to experience life on their own and discover what it is to be an individual and not always have mom or dad waiting around in the wings.

Walt Disney

Children are people, and they should have to reach to learn about things, to understand things, just as adults have to reach if they want to grow in mental stature. Life is composed of lights and shadows, and we would be untruthful, insincere, and saccharine if we tried to pretend there were no shadows. Most things are good, and they are the strongest things; but there are evil things too, and you are not doing a child a favor by trying to shield him from reality. The important thing is to teach a child that good can always triumph over evil.”

It is important to teach children the ability to overcome just about anything that comes in their life. All sorts of problems can come about in the life of a child and as they age, which is why the more you are able to teach them about pushing past these obstacles, the better off they are going to be.

Debra Ginsberg

“Through the blur, I wondered if I was alone or if other parents felt the same way I did – that everything involving our children was painful in some way. The emotions, whether they were joy, sorrow, love or pride, were so deep and sharp that in the end they left you raw, exposed and yes, in pain. The human heart was not designed to beat outside the human body and yet, each child represented just that – a parent’s heart bared, beating forever outside its chest.”

Every parent wonders if they are actually good parents and if they go through the same struggles as other parents. While no to events or situations are exactly alike, experiences are often incredibly similar. That is why there are no bad parenting quotes, but instead remarks about how parents often think they are alone, when really there are all sorts of other parents out there going through the same situation.

Haruki Marakami “Kafka on the Shore”

“Adults constantly raise the bar on smart children, precisely because they’re able to handle it. The children get overwhelmed by the tasks in front of them and gradually lose the sort of openness and sense of accomplishment they innately have. When they’re treated like that, children start to crawl inside a shell and keep everything inside. It takes a lot of time and effort to get them to open up again. Kids’ hearts are malleable, but once they gel it’s hard to get them back the way they were.”

As Haruki points out, children who excel in life are those who are challenged by their parents. You need to raise the bar on your child and to constantly challenge them. You never know what they are capable of if you never challenge them. You can be there should they falter or fall, but when they know you are there to back them up, they are more likely to dust themselves off and try again.

Marjorie Pay Hinckley “Small and Simple Things”

“I know it is hard for you young mothers to believe that almost before you can turn around the children will be gone and you will be alone with your husband. You had better be sure you are developing the kind of love and friendship that will be delightful and enduring. Let the children learn from your attitude that he is important. Encourage him. Be kind. It is a rough world, and he, like everyone else, is fighting to survive. Be cheerful. Don’t be a whiner.”

As Marjorie points out, it is incredibly difficult to raise children, especially as a single parent. However, as long as you are there for your children and encourage them and are cheerful whenever you can be, you are likely to experience the true joys of being a parent.

Tina Fey “Bossypants”

“Read! When your baby is finally down for the night, pick up a juicy book like Eat, Pray, Love or Pride and Prejudice or my personal favorite,Understanding Sleep Disorders: Narcolepsy and Apnea; A Clinical Study. Taking some time to read each night really taught me how to feign narcolepsy when my husband asked me what my “plan” was for taking down the Christmas tree.”

In one of the funny parenting quotes you are going to see, Tina Fey points out the importance of being able to take some time out for yourself. If you don’t, even if it is only for a few minutes at night, you are truly going to go crazy. Having a child is a new experience, so you might not know what to do. However, by simply reading a book and enjoying life a few minutes a day, you can at least reduce the stress you might experience as a parent.

It does not matter whether they are anniversary quotes for parents or specific instances for you as a mother or father, it can sometimes be refreshing to know that there are other individuals who are in the same boat as you. At times, you might not know if there are other people out there dealing with the same situations as you, so reading a few helpful quotes from other individuals can be truly inspiring. While some of these individuals never became parents themselves, the insights they can provide should not be discounted. From the humorous monolog of Tina Fey to the amazing words of Ann Frank, there really is nothing like reading what someone else has said or been through as a parent and know, for a fact, that you are not alone. This might be enough to help you through any difficult situation.
