The History of Porn From the Beginning

History of Porn

Pornography has been around for hundreds of years and while the attention paid to this form of entertainment is only growing, it has reached individuals since the time of the Roman Empire. For some, porn is a vile disgrace and also demeaning towards those who are involved in it. To others, it is a harmful vice that takes hole of them like a drug and makes it difficult to move past viewing the material. Addiction to pornography is just as real as any other addiction, and while it does not contain a substance that is taken by the body, the endorphins the brain releases while viewing pornography, especially upon climax, makes it more and more addicting with every viewing. Due to this, it is important to understand the history of porn and to learn about how it is possible to move past a porn addiction and how to an accountability partner to help move past this sort of an addiction.

Pornography, by definition, first came into existence in 1527 during the end of the Roman Empire. History porn shows it took place during the Italian Renaissance as an individual by the name of Marcantonio Raimondi started to publish sexually explicit engravings. These engravings showcased individuals from mythology partaking in pleasure. This initial creation of the first pornography resulted in Raimondi landing in prison by decree of Pope Clement VIII

While pornography is generally identified as images to stimulate the eyes, it also took off as written word as well. Not long after the crafted engravings, Italian author Pietro Aretino released pornographic works of fiction known as Sonetti Lussuriosi and Ragionamenti. These become extremely popular amongst those who could afford individual publications (the wealthy aristocrats) and it eventually increased the demand for such written material. Eventually, the engravings produced by Raimondi started to accompany the written material and this increased the popularity of the content even more so.

By the 17th century, the publications and copies of the engraved images made its way to France, where authors started to write fictional porn, which helped push the idea of obtaining sexually explicit material throughout Europe. In the 18th century, John Cleland penned “Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure”, a novel revolving around a prostitute. This first saw publication in 1748, although after its final publication in 1749, most publishers deemed it too obscene and it remained an underground favorite until it resurfaced in the United States in the mid 1960’s.

The French Revolution helped spread the idea of porn throughout the world and it eventually made its way to the United States towards the end of the 18th century. However, the Catholic Church saw this as a direct attack on its practices, so it made everything revolving around the idea of porn illegal. In fact, the church eventually accused Marie Antoinette of incest, which just compounded along with the many other crimes held against her until her eventual public execution.

Although pornography sold in small sectors throughout the world (primarily in Europe), it really took off in the 19th century. Eventually, photography proved helpful in capturing actual images of nude individuals. In fact, by 1837, over 50 different pornographic shops were present on Holywell Street in London and by the 1870s, the city of New York sold over 100,000 porn books per year. Photography helped push pornography into the main stream, as the first metal plate printing of a photographic image hit stores in 1846, and the utilization of this medium continued to grow. This continued into a format known as halftone printing, which allowed for more definition in the photograph, such as shading and shadows. Before halftone printing, most photography remained more an outline than anything else.

By the end of the 19th century, film production started to take hold, which in turn also brought out individuals looking to produce film based porn. The very first porn film released is a French Film called Le Coucher De La Marie. It showed a woman performing a basic striptease and then having sex with a man. This proved he very first time where people could actually watch others have sex right in front of them. By the 20th century, pornography really took off. A series of lawsuits throughout the United States allowed the production of porn, despite lawsuits from almost every angle. The United States Supreme Court ruled pornography is protected by the First and 14th Amendments. However, porn took a giant leap with the creation of wide spread men’s magazines. While several other publications before it, Playboy proved the most popular and hit news stands in December of 1953. Of course, the first cover model was Marilyn Monroe, so that only added to the desire to view and purchase the magazine. Hugh Hefner, the creator of Playboy, wanted to focus on producing quality, newsworthy articles while creating artistic nudity. In 1965 though, Bob Guccione published the very first edition of Penthouse in the UK and the first American edition in 1969. This magazine proved much more explicit than Playboy, and by 1974, Larry Flynt Jr. took it up a notch with the creation of Hustler, which shows hardcore sex, fetishes and other material that pushed the very boundaries of porn.

This push by Hustler magazine eventually resulted in new porn video film productions, many of which displayed hardcore pornography. By the 1970s, films like Deep Throat reached millions of viewers, and by the time the VCR became widely available, it allowed individuals to watch productions inside of their own home. The production and material increased throughout the following decades, eventually making its way to computers and the Internet. Now, it is possible to quickly and easily view just about anything with the click of a mouse. However, it is this click of a mouse that has made it that much more difficult for individuals with a porn addiction to move past their situation and also to increase the number of individuals who struggle with a porn addiction as well.

Pornography has become such a major industry that every 30 minutes, a new porn film is made in the United States and every given second, there are 30,000 people in the U.S. viewing pornography. As of 2014, the entire industry is worth about $13 billion. The Internet has made all of this possible, as “Sex” is the top Internet search, and 25 percent of all search engine requests are porn based. According to the same statistics, about 200,000 Americans are considered porn addicts. This means they watch at least 11 hours of porn per week. Of those individuals addicted to porn, 40 percent eventually lose their spouses, 58 percent experience a large financial lose and a third of the individuals lose their jobs because of it. Pornography has actually been found to increase marital infidelity by over 300 percent, and 56 percent of all divorce cases state one of the individuals had too strong of an obsession with pornography.

With pornography proving to be such a major problem for some individuals, it is important to help them seek help. For starters, it is important to clean and delete their computer of all porn found on it. This means not only cleaning out the stash of saved images and video, but also blocking access to these websites. Porn-Blocker and Net Nanny are two applications that can be downloaded and installed onto the computer system that scan every website that attempted to load onto the computer screen. It can then block the material from loading, which helps those who suffer with porn addiction. Of course, when it comes to addiction, most individuals are not simply going to stop attempting to view the material. In fact, as there are so many other ways to view porn, ranging from gentlemen’s clubs to purchasing magazines and videos from stores, it is important to have an accountability partner. For those helping someone through their porn addiction, it is necessary to understand that this is not just some disgusting habit that can be broken easily. It is the same as becoming addicted to cigarettes and alcohol. Once the brain receives a specific stimulation from viewing porn, it starts to crave this same feeling. So, instead of turning on the person, helping them through their addiction is the most important process.

An accountability partner can be a trustworthy individual who is able to openly discuss the situation with the person who is addicted. They are also there to answer the phone or to help them through difficult times without porn. Like any drug, trying to detox from the material is often difficult, but with the help of the partner, this is possible to do. Thankfully, it is possible to break free of the chains of pornography for those who have become addicted and to live a life free of this connection. While it is difficult to do, due to how easy it is to access the material, people have the ability to move past this, it just takes some help.
